Hayman Island 2008
Have you been dreaming of the GBR? Wondering where to go??? With so many choices it is so hard to know which island to chose for your reef experience.
A few years back, we stayed at Hayman Island, long before the cyclones took the resort out. This year, the hubby decided he wanted to relax by the beach with Hayman under renovation we decided to check out Hamilton Island.
I can not offer up a comparison, as that would be like comparing a Cadillac to Hyundai - there is no comparison.
Hands down we all prefer Hayman! There was not a single moment of disappointment, regret (cost) or desire to go home before our time was up on Hayman.
Hamilton Island was not bad, it just wasn't good. We rented a condo, (Whitsunday holidays) which was spacious and sparkling clean, I would recommend this option over the hotel as a golf buggy is standard inclusion and they run 85$ a day to rent. (Additionally, I rang them up last minute and they were ready to wheel and deal on the price - very NOT-Australian like :). You can walk the island or ride the free bus around, but with kids a buggy is just what you need. There is plenty to do on the island, though bring your wallet! Everything costs and it is EXPENSIVE! I would also recommend, planning in advance to order your groceries from Coles online and have them delivered to your condo. There is a grocery store on the island, but it is priced well above Coles and your selection is very limited. The restaurants on the island are expensive and the food just ok, I recommend you cook at home for all meals. For example, Dad and Sister went out fishing and caught a 14 kilo Mackerel (very exciting), however, the fish and chips place charged us 40$ to fry up our OWN FISH (but boy was it was delicious)!
Here is my list:
Highly recommend: Dingy Hire, fishing charter and eating in.
Save your money - don't do: Beach BBQ Safari, restaurants, wildlife park
